As believers, we know that God cares about every part of us — mind, body, and spirit. Prioritizing our health is not just a form of self-care; it’s a form of stewardship. But walking into a doctor’s office can sometimes feel overwhelming, rushed, or even intimidating.

That’s why being prepared — both spiritually and practically — is so important. Before your next appointment, take a moment to pause, pray, and walk in with confidence.

Today, I’m sharing five essential questions you can ask at your next appointment to help you advocate for your wellness and get the clarity you need. Whether you're going for a routine check-up or discussing something more serious, these questions can open the door to better understanding and care. Make sure you take a notebook or journal with you and show up to your appointment prepared!

Prayer for Wisdom Before Your Appointment:

Lord, thank You for the body You’ve given me and for the wisdom You so freely give. Help me to be clear in what I need, bold in what I ask, and wise in what I receive. Give peace to my mind, clarity to my thoughts, and discernment in every decision. Guide my doctor’s hands, heart, and words. Let this be a space where healing begins. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

5 Questions to Ask at Your Next Doctor's Appointment:

  1. Can you explain that in simpler terms? Medical language can be confusing. Don’t leave uncertain. God gives us wisdom, and sometimes that starts with asking the right question.

  2. Are there lifestyle changes I can make instead of (or alongside) medication?Sometimes healing comes through habits. Small changes can make a big impact.

  3. What do my lab results really mean? Should I be concerned?Don’t just accept a number — ask for understanding. It’s your body, and you have a right to know what’s going on inside it.

  4. What should I be watching for between now and my next appointment? This helps you stay alert and proactive, not reactive.

  5. Is this test/procedure necessary, or are there alternatives?Your care should be a conversation, not a command. If you are not satisfied with the answer do your own research, or get a second opinion! Explore your options with confidence.

Bonus Tip: Bring someone you trust to the appointment if you can. Ecclesiastes 4:9 reminds us, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.”
